Fourth grade students at Valley Road School recently came together to honor the memory of September 11, 2001, through reading, reflection, and art. The students read September Roses by Jeanette Winter, a children’s book inspired by the true story of two sisters from South Africa who brought thousands of roses to New York City for a flower show. Following the tragedy, the sisters used their flowers to create a beautiful memorial in the shape of the Twin Towers, offering comfort and hope during a difficult time.

Inspired by the story, each student colored their own roses. Together, the entire grade created a mural of the Twin Towers surrounded by the flowers, recreating the meaningful tribute from the book that is now displayed in the hallway. As they worked, students reflected on the positive acts of kindness, compassion, and unity that emerged in the aftermath of September 11th. They discussed how people can respond to tragedy by helping others, spreading kindness, and bringing hope to their communities.

The project also provided an opportunity to learn about an important moment in history that occurred before many of the students were born. Through their discussions, students recognized that September 11th continues to affect their lives and the world around them today. By combining literature, art, and thoughtful reflection, the fourth graders demonstrated that remembering history is not only about understanding the past, but also about learning how to create a more compassionate future.
